Cosmetic eyelid surgery, for a beautiful look
Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries that intends to correct the imperfections located in the eye contour area. More precisely, blepharoplasty removes the excess of skin from the upper eyelids and fatty deposits (fat pockets) from the lower eyelids.
Its aesthetic effect is very effective in rejuvenating the entire face. In addition, it is often associated with other procedures such as cervico-facial lift or temporal lift.
Cosmetic eyelid surgery : for whom ?
To assess the need for upper or lower blepharoplasty (or both), you must evaluate the condition of the tissues and the appearance of the upper part of the face, the position of the eyebrows and the skin around the eyes.
Some conditions make this plastic surgery ideal for rejuvenating the look and more generally the face :
-
Sagging skin on the upper eyelid.
-
Sad look and "tired" appearance of the eye contour area.
-
Swelling of the upper or lower eyelids.
-
Dark circles under the eyes.
-
Eyebrows too close to the eye opening.
-
Fat pockets under the eyes.
How to prepare before blepharoplasty ?
Blepharoplasty is not considered invasive, but it is recommended to evaluate some aspects in order to get the best results of this surgery.
The patient's state of health is assessed by the plastic surgeon and the anesthesiologist through blood tests prescribed during the first consultation and then, the intervention plan is established including all the surgical and the postoperative phases.
The use of the medication must be reported to the doctor who will evaluate any suspension.
Blepharoplasty : how is it performed ?
Depending on the aesthetic defects of the eyelids, there are 2 types of blepharoplasty :
Upper eyelid surgery
It is for people who suffer from a sagging skin on the upper eyelids that hides a part of the eyes or reduces the visual field.
Lower eyelid surgery
Lower eyelid surgery intends to treat dark circles and fat pockets under the eyes that give the patient a tired look.
Surgical procedures
Anesthesia can be local or general, depending on the patient's state of health.
Two types of incisions can be distinguished :
-
Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids is performed after an incision in the upper palpebral fold to remove the excess of skin and to restore tension to the orbicular muscle.
-
Blepharoplasty of the lower eyelids requires a conjunctival incision to remove the fat pocket and to improve the quality of the skin under the eyes.
The blepharoplasty can last between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the number of eyelids to be lifted, the surgical procedures to be performed and the desired results. If it is combined with injections of filler products, the procedure may take more than two hours.
What are the postoperative phases of the intervention ?
After the intervention, the surgeon will prescribe to the patient some analgesics in order to relieve pain.
The patient should take the prescribed medications and follow carefully the postoperative behavioural prescriptions.
Normal activities can be resumed after an average of 8 days.
Eye discomfort is limited to the first three days.
What are the results of blepharoplasty ?
This procedure gives to the patient a young face. The healing process is gradual and it will take a few weeks to see the final results. Scars are usually reddish only for a few days and tend to fade gradually.
The results of the blepharoplasty are long-lasting, but are always related to the following factors : lifestyle, sun exposure, heredity, ageing, etc.
